Bloc Party

Mercury

“My mercury’s in retrograde!” exclaims Kele, continuing to shake off the tweedy trappings of ‘indie rock’. Screeching into the stratosphere where ‘Flux’’s blasters burnt out, this stunning and adventurous new cut from the Bloc is pure grime gristle:
full of elastic drum’n’bass trumpets, sordid tribal scatterbeats, bass and bits that sound like a black hole full of evil circuses.

I personally dont like it. We need more songs like Helicopter & Banquet...Not Flux! Go back to the old school bloc party :(

I wasn't sure at first but it's definitely a grower. That's what I love about bands like Block Party and Cold Play, they can bring out a new track and it sounds ok, but then it becomes an bloody anthem, and Guaranteed its those tunes that I will play over and over again, and never ever get bored.....

How could the same people who liked Silent Alarm like this?? I'm sorry this is experimental music done by people who should not be experimenting. Stick the guitars and proper drums. It makes my ears bleed...fucking horrible song.

What a fall from grace since Silent Alarm. This song is terrible. Sounds like a bad Dane Bowers single.

I think Mercury is a great song. For one there arent very many bands who take a chance and stray from the norm. And this is definitely far from it. But more importantly I think its completely ridiculous to expect a band to make the exact same type of music throughout their entire career. I dont know about you all who are b*tching, but my music taste certainly isn't the same as when Silent Alarm came out. Why not accept the band growing and changing also?

Flux was great but the jury is still out on this track...

'How could the same people who liked Silent Alarm like this?? 'Why not? I am not the biggest fan of the song, but its still a lot better than a lot of stuff knocking about. Flux is ace, as are Bloc Party's albums.

to all those who can't let go of the silent alarm days, let me remind you that any band who doesn't let their sound develop is deemed unoriginal and boring, and thrown to the wolves without a second thought. Let the band have their creative freedom and if you don't like it you can seek your musical kicks elsewhere rather than spitting bile in their direction.

Like the majority of those above, I love Silent Alarm and it is still one of my most played albums...but since then, oh dear.Flux has grown on me a bit but everything else is pretty bad. I actually dislike AWITC more every time I give it another try. Please bring back the old Bloc Party!

Silent Alarm was seriously brilliant, there's no denying that. And as much as I prefer SA to this song and the style, I'm glad Bloc Party are at least taking the risk of trying to produce something new. There's only so much one band can produce of one style and still be good. It's good that they're taking the Radiohead path and at least trying to go for a new sound, we don't want them ending up like Oasis now do we?

I liked flux, dont like this. Bloc Party were never that good though they have a few good songs, they were never as good as people made out.

I miss the old "Traditional" Bloc Party as much as anyone, but to be perfectly honest all this talk of wanting them to record Silent Alarm 2 is getting a bit trite isn't it? Yes Silent Alarm is so good I cried when I first listened to it, but what makes everyone think that this new direction they're going down is permanent? The only constant is change (the bands current sound) but then again history has time and again been shown to repeat itself no? Bloc Party are going to be around for years to come, and I really don't want to believe we've seen the best of them just yet. God bless them!

this has been done so many times before, bloc party are jumping onto the bandwagon of "lets sing what people want to hear as opposed to what we want to write!"I still love bloc party though

I think it's on of the best singles Bloc Party ever released. It's fresh and avant garde, and even I understand it!!! The trompets are genius and the electrification of the beat is FANTASTIC!!! I don't know what you people are talking about. This may the single, of the best album Bloc Party has ever made!

awesome track, a new direction for the band which i'd rather they didn't follow too whole heartedly but the horns near the end get me going every time
