Many Shades Of Black

The contrast between Brendan Benson and Jack White’s songs makes Raconteurs albums a whiplash-inducing peak/trough ricochet, and this BB effort draws the finger, siren-like, towards ‘skip’. Jack’s screaming guitar tries to thrash its way free, but is drowned in grimace-faced blues-soul that’d bore Joe Cocker. Black is wack.

NME reviews are starting to suck more and more every day. This song is like one of the best on this album and whoever EM is has no taste in music. Go listen to Justin Timberlake or whatever's popular this week.

Its a superb track, would the reviewer please go back and listen to Jay -Z and leave us real music fans to enjoy the vocals and guitar work of Benson and White.

It's disappointing that NME can review one of the finest songs to be released this year so inadequately. The suggestion that all Brendan Benson songs are rubbish and Jack White's are all good is clearly laughable to any music fan. I'd point the reviewer in the direction of BB's Lapalco and suggest he / she try broadening their music horizon's somewhat. By the way, the song is a masterpiece, and maybe the best thing they've ever done - apart from the sublime Carolina Drama, of course.

I would have to agree with 'smnmatt6' regarding the bias against BB. I would also like to express my digust for comments such as 'go and listen to justin timberlake or whatevers popular this week' and 'go back and listen to jay-z'. When did NME site reader become so narrow minded and anal, nearly as bad as the reviewer ;)

Carolina Drama is a different class. I can't believe anyone paid to write for a music magazine could ever write "black is wack"! Clearly someone who should be given their P45. U dont have a clue.

While this may not be the best song on the album, it's still pretty good and i think it's important that the Racontuers have a balance between White's songs and Benson's songs. These are two talented musicians and Emily Mackay, as usual, you are talking out of your arse.
